Title: Undersheriff - Spokane Valley Police Chief

Spokane Valley Police Chief Mark Werner has served in law enforcement for 30 years; beginning his career serving  9 years in the United States Air Force and then 21 years with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.  Prior to becoming Chief of Police for the Spokane Valley, he served 6 years as the Patrol Division Commander for the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office where he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Patrol Division.  Additionally, the SWAT Team, Traffic Unit, K9 Unit, Search and Rescue, Dive Team, Marine Enforcement and Regional Air Support Unit were units under his command.

Throughout Chief Werner’s law enforcement career, he has held a variety of leadership positions and these experiences have instilled in him the value of teamwork.  Chief Werner strongly believes law enforcement is much more effective when working in collaboration with community partners and the citizens.  Working together, we are able to resolve issues and address concerns impacting our community.  Chief Werner’s experience has allowed him to build positive relationships with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners, as well as other public safety and community groups.

Chief Werner is an active representative of Greater Spokane Emergency Management Operations Group (EMOG) and the Joint Leadership Forum.  As a representative of these units, he works cooperatively with public safety and private sector partners in identifying and resolving gaps in our regional emergency response capabilities.  Chief Werner is also a member of the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs, National Tactical Officers Association, Washington State Tactical Officers Association and the Spokane Regional Safe Streets Task Force Policy Board.

Chief Werner is a graduate of Eastern Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in General Studies with an emphasis in Criminal Justice.
