County Commissioners Extend Suspension of Late Fees and Penalties for Sewer and Solid Waste Billings
SPOKANE COUNTY, June 16, 2020 – This afternoon, the Spokane County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution extending the suspension of late fees, penalties and interest on unpaid charges for both sewer and solid waste billings. The suspension will be in effect through the end of August 2020.
Environmental Services Director Kevin Cooke made the recommendation to the BoCC, citing the hardships confronting some county residents as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Many of the families and business we serve are in the midst of a financial crisis because of unemployment or lost business. This is an opportunity to support the community by easing that burden,” Cooke said.
During an average month, the department collects approximately $55,000 in late fees and penalties. The three-month suspension could mean a loss of up $165,000 for the county.
