Fatal Motorcycle/SUV Crash in Deer Park
Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Traffic Unit Investigators responded to a fatal motorcycle/SUV crash on E. Crawford Street at S. Mission Avenue in the City of Deer Park. The adult male motorcycle rider was pronounced deceased at the scene. The adult female driver of the SUV and her two juvenile passengers did not appear to be seriously injured.
An excessively high rate of speed by the motorcycle is believed to be a factor in the fatal incident.
On November 14, 2023, just prior to 5:30 pm, Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies, preparing to clear a call in the N. Colville Road and E. 2nd Avenue area, heard a motorcycle traveling south on N. Colville approaching their location. As the motorcycle came into view, it appeared to be traveling at a much faster rate of speed than the posted 25 mph speed limit. The Deputies, still out of their vehicles, flashed their flashlights at the rider as he passed, and the rider did slow as he continued south.
The motorcycle turned east on Crawford Road, and moments later, Deputies were advised of a vehicle crash at Crawford and Mission involving a motorcycle.
Arriving Deputies recognized the blue and white Suzuki motorcycle, with no visible license plate, as the one that had just passed them. They relieved a citizen performing CPR and began life-saving measures until Spokane County Fire 4 arrived. A short time later, the rider was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The adult female driver of the SUV and her two juvenile passengers were shaken but did not appear to be seriously injured. They were provided medical attention and evaluated by medics.
Due to the severity of the incident, Traffic Unit Investigators were called to the scene to assist and began a full investigation. SIRT Team Volunteers also responded to assist with traffic control while a section of Crawford Road was closed.
Initial information gained from witnesses, the victim, and evidence at the scene indicate the motorcycle rider was driving recklessly and at a very high rate of speed eastbound on Crawford. One witness estimated the bike was traveling 80 to 100 mph when it passed him on the passenger’s side of his vehicle, next to the curb, east of the Crawford and Colville intersection.
The victim was traveling north on Mission, and after stopping and checking both directions, she began to turn west on Crawford. As she did, she noticed a single headlight approaching from the west, and she tried to speed up to avoid a collision. Unfortunately, the motorcycle approaching at such a high-speed rate collided with the rear of the SUV.
Traffic Unit Investigators remained at the location for several hours, collecting evidence and documenting the entire crash scene. This remains an ongoing investigation, but the high speed of the motorcycle is believed to be a factor in this deadly collision.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the decedent, along with the cause and manner of death, at a later time when appropriate.
