Spokane County Responds to Urgent Housing Needs, Opens Applications for Comprehensive Plan Amendment

SPOKANE, Wash. – Applications are open for Comprehensive Plan Amendments, after the Board of Commissioners heard from planning staff about increased housing needs in the coming years as the Comprehensive Plan Update gets underway for 2026.

“As Spokane County’s population continues to grow, we want to empower developers to build for the future. We know we have an ongoing housing shortage and a continuing need for residential housing development to address it. While the 2026 Comprehensive Plan Update gets underway, we can’t wait to address the urgent housing needs in our region. We look forward to reviewing applications, as we look at current and future growth and development opportunities,” said Mary Kuney, Chair of the Board of County Commissioners and representing District 4.

Scott Simmons, CEO commented: “We are open for business. The Board of Commissioners concluded that continued residential development is needed and should be accommodated while working toward the 2026 Comprehensive Plan Update. At the Board’s direction, staff will begin accepting Comprehensive Plan Amendments specifically to support residential development and increase housing stock. Applications may be submitted immediately and are accepted until December 20, 2023.”

Application materials can be found on the Spokane County Building & Planning website at www.spokanecounty.org/BP. Planning staff are available for questions at 509.477.3675.
