UPDATE: Fatal Shooting Suspect Identified and Arrested for Murder 1st Degree
Through the ongoing investigation, Spokane Valley Major Crimes Detectives identified the suspect in the fatal shooting of an adult male victim in the 2200 block of N. Argonne Road as 46-year-old Jason S. Barton. Detectives developed probable cause to arrest Barton for the charge of Murder 1st Degree.
At approximately 12:45 am on September 3, 2023, Detectives located Barton at his home in the 2300 block of N. Hutchinson, and with the assistance of Patrol Deputies, successfully took him into custody without incident.
Barton was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Murder 1st Degree.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the victim, along with his cause and manner of death, when appropriate.
Major Crimes Detectives Investigate Fatal Shooting
Spokane Valley Major Crimes Detectives are investigating an apparent fatal shooting on N. Argonne Road near E. Knox Avenue in Spokane Valley. Information about what occurred is limited at this early stage of the investigation. No arrests have been made.
On September 2, 2023, at approximately 3:30 pm, Spokane Valley Patrol Deputies responded to the report of an injured male in the 2200 block on N. Argonne. The caller stated the male, bleeding from the chest, had just walked into the lobby of the business, but they didn’t know what caused his injuries.
Spokane Valley Deputies, Spokane County Deputies, and Spokane Valley Fire personnel arrived, contacted the adult male victim, and provided medical care, including CPR, for what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, the adult male was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Major Crimes Detectives and Forensic Unit Technicians responded to help locate the scene where the shooting occurred, process it for evidence, and continue the investigation to determine what led to the victim's death.
At this time, information about what happened leading up to the fatal incident is limited. From the initial information learned at this point, investigators do not believe this was a random incident, and there is no known ongoing threat to the public stemming from it.
Anyone not already contacted by Deputies with information regarding this incident or observed /heard anything suspicious this afternoon around 3:30 pm in the surrounding area of E. Knox, between N.
