[ARCHIVED] Detention Officers Seize 300 Suspected Fentanyl Pills During Booking

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. – Detention Services officials at the Spokane County Jail announced this week Detention Officers seized approximately 300 plus suspected fentanyl pills in the jail booking area. The seizure was the result of one incident, but is not the first-time officers have made such a discovery.

The seizure occurred during a search at the time of booking using technology to help stop the introduction of weapons and drugs in the facility. The female inmate was being booked for Driving While Suspended License when the 300 pills were discovered on her person commonly used to hide items from being discovered during pat-searches. Lab results to confirm the pills contain fentanyl is pending.  If confirmed, Spokane Police Department will likely add charges of Inmate in Possession of Narcotics.  The DEA reports just two milligrams of fentanyl, which is equal to 10-15 grains of table salt, is considered a lethal dose.

“I thank our dedicated men and women of Detention Services for their professionalism and exceptional work. Their duty is protecting the safety of all, including safeguarding our community and the inmates in our custody.  Due to the vigilance of our officers, lethal contraband was prevented from entering the jail housing units. It also only further underscores the need for modern correctional infrastructure like our new state-of-the-art body scanner, and drug and alcohol programming for offenders,” said Mike Sparber, Senior Director of Law & Justice for Spokane County.
