[ARCHIVED] UPDATE Gray Fire: Tuesday, August 29, 2023

Gray Quick-1

UPDATE Gray Fire: Tuesday, August 29, 2023

Rain is expected today across the fire area which can make roads slippery. Please use extra caution when driving and keep a sharp eye out for fire related traffic that make frequent stops, turns and park along roadsides. High winds are also forecasted, presenting a serious hazard from fire damaged trees which may lose limbs or fall.

Yesterday’s Activities: Wildland fire crews continued their work searching for and extinguishing remaining sources of heat (hotspots) around homes and other structures. With increased temperatures and decreased humidity yesterday, at least one flare-up around a home was detected and suppressed. State Mobilization firefighters equipped with self-contained breathing apparatus continued to provide an important resource extinguishing non-organic debris found smoldering which can produce harmful fumes. Excavators continued to be employed to address large, buried, smoldering debris.

Today’s Activities: Coming out of a few days of hot, dry conditions, smoldering areas and flare-ups within the fire are possible. Forecasted high winds may further increase fire activity and crews will continue to be vigilant for detecting and suppressing flare-ups. Crews will be increasing efforts directed at “fire repair”, addressing impacts from fire suppression activities such as repairing fences cut for access and restoring areas where fire lines were created and no longer needed.

Weather: A strong weather system is forecasted to move into the area and across much of eastern Washington today bringing a high likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds and significant rain from mid-day Tuesday through Wednesday. Sustained winds of 15-25mph and gusts up to 35 mph are expected with the potential for much stronger isolated gusts of up to 60 mph associated with thunder cells. Up to an inch of rain is possible in some areas.

Evacuations: Evacuation maps are posted on the Gray Fire Inciweb page and Spokane County’s Emergency Management Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/GEGEmergencyMgt.
