There is heavy fire related traffic in and around the Gray Fire area. Please be extra alert for vehicles making frequent stops, turns and parked along the side of the road.

Yesterday’s Activities: Wildland fire crews continued to focus on extinguishing remaining sources of heat (hot spots) around homes and other structures. They also completed a systematic search (gridding) for hotspots to extinguish along the fire perimeter, I-90, and other roads. Firefighters continued to work in conjunction with the City of Spokane, Spokane Regional Air Support Unit (SRASU), and DNR to employ unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), or drones, to locate hot spots around structures. Crews equipped with hand-held infrared sensors called PalmIRs were also at work detecting hot spots. Drones and PalmIRs are equipped with infrared technology that is only used to detect sources of heat and do not record any images. Wildland fire crews worked with the drones and PalmIR operators to extinguish hot spots as they were discovered. Non-organic debris found smoldering can produce fumes harmful to breath and State Mobilization firefighters equipped with self-contained breathing apparatus were called in to extinguish those hotspots. Perimeters around over 1300 structures have been checked for hot spots as of yesterday. Excavators were employed to increase efficiency of the suppression of larger heat sources, such as deeply rooted stumps that were smoldering, further increasing the pace “mop up” can be completed.

Today’s Activities: Crews will continue patrolling, systematically searching for and extinguishing hotspots along and within the fire perimeter.  Crews will continue to work in conjunction with SRASU, City of Spokane, and DNR to use drones and PalmIRs to locate smoldering material around structures.

Weather: Hot and dry conditions will continue today with temperatures in the mid 90’s, but Tuesday is expected to bring a dramatic change from a strong cold front passing through that may deliver thunderstorms with high winds, rain, and potentially hail and lightning.
