[ARCHIVED] UPDATE: Shooting on Windmill Drive

UPDATE: Shooting on Windmill Drive

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Major Crime Detectives continue investigating this morning’s shooting in the 8900 block of S. Windmill Drive at approximately 10:10 am.

With information gained through the investigation, it appears the incident began as an argument involving the suspect, 22-year-old Charlie J. Birkland, and his mother and stepfather at the home where they all live.  The volatile situation quickly escalated, and Birkland armed himself with a handgun, shooting both victims before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

At approximately 10:35 am, a responding Deputy contacted Birkland in the parking lot of Spokane County Fire Station 81, 6117 S. Palouse Highway.  He was cooperative, followed commands, and was quickly detained without incident.  He was transported to the Public Safety Building to be interviewed by Major Crimes Investigators.

This afternoon, Major Crimes Detective C. Ennis developed probable cause to charge Birkland with two counts of attempted Murder 1st Degree, and he is expected to be booked into the Spokane County Jail later this evening.

At last check, both victims remain hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

This remains an active investigation, and no additional information is available at this time.
