
Update: Deputy-Involved Shooting on E. Lyons Avenue
The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the name of the Deputy involved in the August 21, 2022, incident in the 1700 block of E. Lyons Avenue.
Sergeant Darin Staley is a 27-year Spokane County Sheriff’s Office veteran, beginning his career in December of 1994. During that time, he worked as a Patrol Deputy and a Field Training Officer (FTO).
In June of 2005, he was promoted to the rank of Detective/Corporal, where he served as a Patrol Corporal before being transferred to Property Crimes as a Detective, followed by an assignment to Major Crimes as a Detective.
In September 2019, Detective Staley earned a promotion to Sergeant and was assigned to the Patrol Division. Sergeant Staley is also an Emergency Operations Team/Dive Team Supervisor.
In 2015 as a Detective, he received an Annual Unit Merit Award 2015 as a member of the Investigative Unit. In 2020 as a Sergeant, he received an Annual Unit Merit Award 2020 as a member of the TAC Team.
Sergeant Staley has also earned a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Washington University in Criminal Justice.
In compliance with WAC 139-12, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office/Spokane Valley Police Department personnel will not be involved in this investigation.
The SIIR Team continues to investigate the incident. The SIIR Team is comprised of multiple agencies in eastern Washington, including the Spokane Police Department, the Washington State Patrol, Liberty Lake Police Department, Airway Heights Police Department, Spokane Valley Police Department, and the Spokane County Sheriff's Office.
- The Spokane Police Department is the managing agency in this incident. All future communications regarding this incident will be sent via the SIIR Team.
Once the SIIR Team investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
