Heat Damage Forces Closure of E. Stoneman Road

SPOKANE COUNTY, June 30, 2021 – Record-breaking heat is taking a toll on E. Stoneman Road – which will be CLOSED through the holiday weekend due to areas of pavement distress and potholes. Public Works crews began applying sand and water to the road last night to mitigate the damage and will continue to do so through the weekend.

Spokane County Public Works Maintenance Operations Supervisor Andy Schenk says that while the damage is limited to approximately three locations and about 100-feet total, the concern is keeping motorists safe.  “Not only are we experiencing a triple-digit heat wave, but the longer it lasts the potential for more damage to our road surfaces is certainly a possibility,” Schenk said.  He added, “Motorists can help preserve the pavement by not speeding.   Asphalt may look solid, but it softens when temperatures rise and can be damaged by speeding or stop-and-start driving.”

A detour is in place (see attached map) for E. Stoneman Road between Market Street and N. Argonne/Bruce Road.  As temperatures slowly decrease, the road is expected to reopen on Tuesday, July 6, 2021.

The mission of Spokane County Public Works is to provide our citizens and the traveling public with safe and maintained roads, bridges and stormwater facilities through efficient and quality Operations, Construction, Engineering and Planning services.
