Armed DV Suspect Shot by Deputies

Spokane Valley Sheriff’s Deputies shot an armed adult male suspect at the scene of a reported Domestic Violence incident earlier this evening in Spokane Valley.  The Deputies began life-saving efforts, and the suspect was transported to the hospital for additional care.

The Spokane Independent Investigative Response Team (SIIR Team) is at the scene and conducting the investigation.

On March 8, 2020, at approximately 4:25 p.m., Spokane Valley Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a Domestic Violence incident at an apartment complex located in the 12100 block of E. Cataldo.

The caller stated the victim called telling them the suspect, the boyfriend of the victim, was intoxicated and attacking her and her young child.  It was reported the suspect had access to firearms, but it was unknown if he was armed or if medics were needed.

Multiple Deputies arrived at the location within minutes and quickly advised they needed emergency backup.

Initial information indicates, Deputies gave commands, and the suspect had a gun.  Soon after, Deputies advised shots had been fired, and the suspect was hit and on the ground.  Additional radio traffic stated the suspect was breathing and continued to reach toward a firearm.

The suspect was detained, and life-saving efforts were provided until Spokane Valley Fire and AMR personnel took over.  The suspect was transported to the hospital where at last check, he was in critical but stable condition.

Thankfully, the victim, Deputies involved, and no innocent citizens were injured during this extremely dangerous and rapidly evolving situation.

Following standard protocol, the four Deputies who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave.

The SIIR Team is comprised of agencies in Spokane County, including the Spokane Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Spokane Valley Police Department and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

In compliance with WAC 139-12, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office/Spokane Valley Police Department personnel will not be involved in this investigation.

  • The Washington State Patrol is the case managing agency for this incident.  All future communications will be sent via the SIIR Team.
  • The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office will release the names of the Deputies involved at a later time.
  • Once the SIIR Team investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
