[ARCHIVED] Evacuation of the Spokane County Courthouse and Public Safety Building

Fire-SPD-SCSO

This afternoon, at approximately 10:30 a.m., a Spokane County Courthouse employee reported feeling dizzy and having a burning sensation in their throat after opening a letter delivered through the mail system.

The incident was reported to Courthouse Security. The Courthouse, and later as a precaution, the Public Safety Building, was immediately evacuated by Sheriff’s Deputies, Spokane Police Officers, and Spokane County Corrections Officers.

Spokane Fire Department personnel arrived and began assessing the possibility of hazardous materials. After they determined there was not a threat to health, the evidence was collected and turned over to investigators from the FBI and U.S. Postal Service.

At approximately 12:00 p.m., the Courthouse and Public Safety Building were reopened to the public and employees.

Sheriff’s Office and Spokane Police Investigators will continue to assist their Federal partners with this investigation.

Although Spokane Fire determined there was no threat to health:

• Citizens who may experience any symptoms are asked to contact their medical providers.

• Spokane County Employees who may experience any symptoms are asked to contact Spokane County Risk Management at 477-3617.

• Spokane City Employees who may experience any symptoms are asked to contact Spokane City Risk Management at 625-6222.
