SWAT Team members and Negotiators ended a tense domestic violence situation where the suspect would not respond to repeated attempts to contact him. The standoff ended several hours later when a young child, who was inside the residence with the suspect, was safely removed and the suspect was taken into custody without incident.
On March 12, 2019, at approximately 6:10 a.m., Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a domestic violence incident at a residence located in the 3900 block of E. Center Rd. The victims stated she was violently assaulted by her roommate, later identified as 43-year-old Dana A. Keener. She was held against her will but escaped the residence and needed medical attention.
As Deputies spoke with the victim, they learned Keener was reportedly armed with a knife during the assault, and the victim’s young child was also inside the residence. The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Keener turned off the lights in the residence when Deputies arrived. With several attempts, using multiple methods to contact Keener unanswered, SWAT and Hostage Negotiators were called to the scene to aid in safely removing the young child from the residence while safely taking Keener into custody.
At approximately 10:15 a.m., Keener and the child appeared at the door. At the direction of SWAT Team members, the uninjured child was released by Keener and taken to a position of safety. After, Keener followed commands and was safely taken into custody.
Major Crimes Domestic Violence Detectives were granted a search warrant for the residence and continue to investigate.
Keener was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for felony charges of Assault 2nd Degree and Kidnapping 1st Degree.
