Public Hearing August 14th on Update of Recycling Service Level Areas
The Spokane County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, to receive input on the expansion of the recycling service level areas. The Regional Solid Waste System is proposing to update the areas included in the Recycling Service Level Ordinance (shown in red on the map). Within the established boundaries of the Recycling Service Level Area, any resident subscribing to curbside garbage pickup will automatically be enrolled in the curbside recycling service, whether they use it or not.
Several factors were taken into consideration for the proposed area updates:
- Public requests
- Resident petitions
- Impacts to residents
- Area growth
- Designated planning zones and density
- Services present
- Service provider/hauler considerations
- Economic sustainability
It is required by state law RCW 70.95 that local government establish minimum service levels for solid waste in the county. (The Recycling Service Levels and boundaries are established in Spokane County Code, Chapter 8.58.) Residents may petition the county for services and the county must evaluate these requests.
