SIRR Team Investigating Officer Involved Shooting Incident

October 4, 2017 Shadle Center Parking Lot

The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team continues to investigate last week’s Officer Involved Shooting incident which occurred in the Shadle Center parking lot.

On October 4, 2017, at approximately 4:45 p.m., Spokane Police Officers located a 1994 Ford Explorer stolen in a carjacking/shooting two days prior in the area of the 8200 block of N. Crestline where the owner of the vehicle was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers maintained surveillance while additional marked patrol cars responded and Spokane Fire Department personnel staged in the area.

Believing the male suspect, identified as 34-year-old Chad Cochell, may still be armed and attempt to flee, placing motorists and citizens at risk, Officers moved in and blocked potential escape routes with SPD vehicles and began giving commands.  A passenger followed commands and exited the vehicle as instructed.  Cochell, who was armed with a handgun and displayed it, remained in the vehicle as officers gave commands and, soon after, two officers fired their weapons, striking Cochell.

Officers immediately began life saving efforts, assisted by Spokane Fire personnel who arrived quickly however, despite their efforts, Cochell was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol was invoked and SIRR Team Detectives responded to investigate.  A loaded handgun was recovered from the suspect.

SIRR Team Detectives continue to conduct interviews and review evidence, including any footage captured by body cameras, business surveillance cameras or cellphone videos.
