Bridge No. 4404 | County Road Project C3302 Project Type: Bridge Replacement Project Manager: Michael Duke Jr., P.E. Design Year: 2022-2023 Construction Year: 2024
This bridge replacement is located on Connor Road just west of Sands Road in south Spokane County, Section 32, T 24N, R 44E, WM. The existing bridge, which crosses California Creek, was constructed in 1953 and is currently posted with weight restrictions. Distress and rot observed in the bridge girders, cap and piling prompted the County to replace the bridge.
The existing single span timber bridge is 21 feet in length and 20 feet wide curb-to-curb. The new bridge will be constructed with a 42 foot long, 24-foot-wide modular steel bridge supported on steel piling. Approaches on both the east and west ends of the bridge will also be reconstructed as needed to accommodate the new bridge elevation. Both the bridge and roadway will remain in their original footprint and elevated approximately 2 feet with some localized widening to occur. The project length will stretch approximately 200 feet along Connor Road, starting approximately 75 feet west of the existing bridge. A temporary traffic detour will be in place during construction which will direct traffic to Sands Road, Palouse Highway and Connor Road.
Programmed for construction in 2024, the project is expected to take approximately 2 months to complete. Engineers will be working closely with impacted property owners, regulators, and the public to ensure a successful project. The project will be funded with Spokane County Road funds with the work performed by Spokane County bridge and maintenance crews with the assistance of the Whitman County Bridge crew.
