MacKenzie Natural Area Trail Plan

MacKenzie Natural Area is a 110-acre County park located east of Liberty Lake and just north of Liberty Lake Regional Park. The property was acquired by Spokane County from Greenstone as part of a larger transaction in 2011. The park provides several single-track, natural surface trails built by County Parks in 2013-2014, including several segments of user-built trail. Recently, working with a private property owner, Spokane County Parks, Recreation & Golf ("County Parks") secured a public trail easement to legally connect MacKenzie Natural Area to Liberty Lake Regional Park. In Fall 2020, Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance East Chapter ("Evergreen East") volunteers built a new trail within the easement, allowing visitors to park at the Idaho Road Trailhead and ride / hike to MacKenzie Natural Area.
About This Project: Partnering with Evergreen East, County Parks has developed a draft trail plan for MacKenzie Natural Area in response to increased public use throughout the County's park system. This increased use has "fueled" non-sanctioned user built trails appearing throughout the park system, including MacKenzie Natural Area. As a proactive measure, County Parks has partnered with Evergreen East to propose changes to the trail system on MacKenzie Natural Area to better accommodate this increasing use and improve the overall sustainability of the trail system. We need your help and input to finalize these proposed changes.
Anticipated Project Timeline: Planning & Design - September 2020 - February 2021 | Construction - April 2021 - October 2021
Funding: Construction will be completed by volunteers. Trail signage, native seed mix and other need materials for the project will be paid by the General Fund through the Parks Department's annual budget.
