The Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) is the Federal/National system that sends out Presidential alerts, national tests, and local or state Emergency Alert System (EAS) notifications or Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs).
EAS: The Emergency Alert System alert and warning notifications are sent through the broadcast networks of cable, TV and radio, and includes NOAA Weather Radio when appropriate.
WEA: Wireless Emergency Alerts ideally reach all cell phones in a targeted area. They are initiated by public safety personnel, but you must have geo-location activated (on) on your cell phone and must be willing to receive emergency messages to get these types of alerts.
