SIGN-ON BONUS INFORMATION: (Effective 07/01/2023 - 06/30/2024)
The Spokane County Sheriff's Office is proud to offer sign-on bonuses for several positions within our Agency. The following positions qualify:
Deputy Positions:
Deputy Sheriff-Entry Level: Up to $10,000*
Deputy Sheriff-Intermediate Lateral: Up to $25,000*
Deputy Sheriff-Lateral: Up to $25,000*
*Sign-on bonuses do not apply to current Spokane County employees and all sign-on bonuses must be given approval by the Spokane County HR Director prior to issuance. Check each job posting for more information and for payout details.
Information for Entry Level Deputy Applicants:
Spokane County Civil Service has teamed up with Public Safety Testing for the initial testing for our Entry Level Deputy position. All applicants must register and test with Public Safety Testing before proceeding with a Spokane County Application.
The next Public Safety test date(s) in the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene area is scheduled for:
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2023
Tests are held at the Spokane Fire Department Training Center
Applicants can register for both the Law Enforcement Written Exam & WA CJTC PAT; Applicants must register for testing directly with Public Safety Testing

Attention Deputy Sheriff Entry Level Applicants - The Spokane County Sheriff's Office is now covering Public Safety Testing (PST) exam fees (read on for details)!
Applicants who select the Spokane County Sheriff's Office as one of the two initial agencies selected will have their $55 written exam and PAT testing fee covered. Written exams must be completed in-person at a PST administered exam site throughout the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, at a PST authorized college or testing center, or administered via PST’s online, in-home testing program. First attempt Physical Ability Tests (PATs) administered at a PST test site throughout the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, or via PST’s V-PAT in-home testing session would qualify.
Examples of fees covered for the Public Safety Testing Law Enforcement Written Exam and Washington Physical Ability Test (PAT):
- In-person written exam administered at a PST test site
- Virtual written exam administered via PST’s online, in-home testing program
- In-person physical ability test (PAT) administered at a PST test site
- Virtual physical ability test (V-PAT) via PST’s V-PAT, in-home testing
Applicants can have their scores sent to as many agencies as they like; however, additional agencies beyond the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office may have additional costs that will not be covered by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office; costs incurred for additional agency selections will be the responsibility of the tester. Any cancellation or rescheduling fees, PATs proctored at Anytime Fitness, other test administration fees related to testing at another authorized test center, and/or other additional fees not stipulated will be covered in full by the applicant. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office does not cover the $15 remote testing fee or any testing fee charged by a testing center; there may also be other remote testing fees that are not covered. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office does not cover any additional fees if an applicant fails any portion of a test and must schedule a re-examination. For more information and specific questions regarding these fees, please contact Public Safety Testing directly.
Examples of fees NOT covered by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (this list is not a comprehensive list; these would be the tester’s responsibility to pay for)
- Sending test scores to any agency other than the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office
- Test rescheduling fees
- Test cancellation fees
- PAT at an Anytime Fitness facility
- Additional test administration fees related to testing at an authorized or remote test center
Attention Deputy Sheriff Intermediate and Lateral Applicants
Upon receipt and confirmation of completed Spokane County Government Jobs application, and approval from WSCJTC for the Equivalency Academy, applicant will be sent a Personal History Statement (PHS) form, background packet, and Training & Experience form to complete, along with a due date for completion. Applicants who submit their completed paperwork on time and have no automatic disqualifiers (per Sheriff's Office Policy 1000, viewable at: Sheriff's Office Policy Manual) listed on their PHS will be invited for an obstacle course Physical Ability Test with job-related events. Physical Ability Tests given by Public Safety Testing are not accepted for Lateral or Intermediate Lateral applicants.
