School Zone Flashing Beacons

The flashing yellow beacon lighting is one of the most effective ways to reduce the speed of vehicles in school zones. On average, drivers travel five to seven miles per hour slower when the flashing yellow school zone lights are present. Spokane County Engineer's Office is pleased to report, having installed new flashing beacon school signs at the schools listed below.

Funding & Support
Funding and support for the flashing beacons was made possible by the Spokane County Engineer's Office, Spokane County Sheriff's Office, Spokane County Target Zero Task Force, Washington Traffic Safety Commission, Windfield Park and Pinewood Hills Neighborhood Associations and Mountainside Middle School PTO.

Traffic Safety Initiative
The new flashing beacon school zone signs are part of an overall traffic safety requirement that protects more than 630,000 elementary school age children in Washington State.

The new flashing beacon school zone signs were funded by Washington Traffic Safety Commission, Spokane County Engineering and Roads, and Spokane Public Schools.
Children in Crosswalks
Please watch for children in crosswalks. Children under age 13 have limited depth perception and may be unable to judge the distance and time of an approaching vehicle. Remember a child has an 80-90% rate of survival if struck by a car traveling 20 mph, as apposed to 90% chance of death if the car is traveling 25 or 30 mph. Always obey crossing guards and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Watch for the new flashing beacon school zone signs and law enforcement presence reminding drivers to stay under 20 mph. It is OK to drive slower especially at dawn, dusk, and in bad weather.

School zones only protect children if all drivers are alert and follow the school zone rules. Remember, traffic fines are doubled in school zones. Kids need to get to and from school safely! Please do your part to help them stay safe!
