On Thursday morning, May 17th, at about 2:00 a.m., Spokane Valley Sheriff's Deputy Jason Karnitz was patrolling the area of Sprague and Pines when he saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed through the parking lot on the northeast side of the intersection.
Deputy Karnitz followed the vehicle eastbound out of the parking lot and observed the driver commit several infractions in a short period of time.
Deputy Karnitz attempted to stop the vehicle near the area of Pines and Valleyway Road. The suspect vehicle failed to stop and accelerated eastbound on Valleyway in an obvious attempt to elude Deputy Karnitz. After a short pursuit eastbound on Valleyway, Deputy
Karnitz chose to terminate the pursuit due to safety concerns near the area of Valleyway and Adams Road.
The suspect did not slow down after Deputy Karnitz terminated the pursuit and failed to negotiate a "T" intersection at Valleyway and Adams Road. Deputy Karnitz saw the vehicle collide with a fence at the intersection and observed the driver exit the driver's
side door and run eastbound from the intersection.
Spokane County Sheriff's K9 Gordy and his handler arrived on scene and quickly located the juvenile male driver hiding under some brush near the collision scene. The suspect told Deputy Karnitz he was walking home from work, heard all the sirens and decided
to hide because he was scared.
• The suspect was booked into Juvenile Detention for the charges of Attempting to Elude, Hit and Run, No Valid Operator's License and Obstructing.
