Robbery Suspect Arrested

Posted 10/14/2013 10:54 AM by MDGREGORY

On Sunday morning, October 13th, 2013, at about 1:00 a.m., Spokane Valley Sheriff's Deputy David Lawhorn responded to a robbery call at Zip Trip, located at 1403 N. Mullan Road. The female employee told Deputy Lawhorn a white male around 50-years-old, approximately 5'4", wearing brown pants and a red handkerchief around his head entered the store. She said the suspect, later identified as 46-year-old Johnathon McElfish, was wearing one black glove and a brown glove. She said McElfish's right fingers were curled up in his hand and appeared non-functional.

The employee said McElfish selected an item off the shelf then walked behind the counter and took two packs of Camel 99's. McElfish said, "If you say anything I will kill you". The employee said McElfish exited the store and rode his bicycle eastbound on Sinto Avenue. She recognized McElfish because he had been in the store two times prior when she was working.

At 1:30 a.m., Deputy Lawhorn was assisting another deputy on a traffic stop at Locust and Sinto. He observed a male ride by the location on a bicycle and he was carrying a large knife on his belt. Deputy Lawhorn got in his patrol vehicle and attempted to stop the male, later identified as McElfish. McElfish refused to stop and eventually ran from Deputy Lawhorn in the playground at Ness Elementary. Deputy Lawhorn caught McElfish and detained him until the employee came to the school and positively identified McElfish as the person that robbed Zip Trip.

While walking McElfish to his patrol vehicle, Deputy Lawhorn noticed he was wearing one black and one brown glove. He also found a red handkerchief inside McElfish's coat pocket and two packs of Camel 99's.

• McElfish was booked into Spokane County Jail for 2nd Degree Robbery.
