On July 5, 2013, at 8:30 p.m., Spokane Valley Sheriff's Deputies responded to a felony assault call near the area of 1200 N. Barker Road. When deputies arrived on scene they learned that the suspect, identified as 60-year-old Wayne Eaton, had struck the victim of the assault in the leg with a metal bar.

Deputy J. Thurman, his K9 partner Laslo and two Liberty Lake Officer's arrived on scene first. They updated additional responding deputies that Eaton had armed himself with a knife in the back of his camper and was refusing commands to exit.

Deputies continued to order Eaton out of the camper and told him he was under arrest for hitting the initial victim with the metal bar. Eaton eventually opened the camper door and Deputy T. Kullman and a Liberty Lake Police Officer attempted to grab Eaton's hands. Eaton backed into the camper and, not knowing where the knife was, Deputy Thurman deployed K9 Laslo into the camper.

Eaton had a hard cast on his left arm that he used to assault Laslo after he made contact on Eaton's left, upper thigh. Eaton struck Laslo multiple times with his cast, eventually causing Laslo to bleed from the nose. As Deputy Thurman and Deputy Kullman attempted to take Eaton into custody, he continued his assaultive behavior attempting to strike the deputies with his cast. Deputy Thurman was struck on his left wrist and received minor injuries during the struggle.

• Eaton was booked into the Spokane County Jail on the felony charges of 2nd Degree Assault, 3rd Degree Assault (2-counts), and Harming a Police Dog.
