On Wednesday night, May 15, 2013, at 11:45 p.m., Spokane Valley Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a single vehicle crash in the intersection of Sprague and Fancher. When deputies arrived on scene, they located a 4-door sedan that had crashed head-on against
a power pole on the northeast corner of the intersection. Deputies tended to the driver and passenger of the vehicle. The driver was not responsive; the passenger was alert and conscious, however complaining of chest pains. Medics arrived on scene a short
time later and performed life saving measures on the 50-year-old male driver. He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
Sheriff's Office Collision Investigators responded to the scene and determined the vehicle had been traveling westbound on Sprague prior to hitting the power pole head-on. The 50-year-old driver had not been wearing his seatbelt, which was a contributing factor
to his death. The 30-year-old passenger was wearing his seatbelt and received minor injuries. Investigators determined excessive speed was not the causing factor, but it appears alcohol and/or drugs were contributing factors. The investigation is on-going
and the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office will release the identity of the driver at a later time.
