Male Arrested For Imitation Bomb

Posted 5/1/2013 10:32 AM by MDGREGORY

On Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at 3:00 p.m., Spokane County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a bomb call near the 18700 block of North Thompson Creek Road in Newman Lake. The male victim had made a report earlier in the day that his son's friend, 26-year-old Jacob Mahoney, had called him and said he was going to put a bomb in his mailbox. The victim does not have a mailbox but, fearing for the safety of his neighbors, he checked their mailboxes and found what looked like four sticks of red dynamite taped together. There was also some type of battery on the device and wiring.

Deputy David Morris, and a Liberty Lake Officer, responded to the scene and closed off traffic to the immediate area. The combined Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) responded to the scene. EDU utilized their bomb disposal robot to investigate the possible improvised explosive device inside the mailbox. It was determined the realistic looking device was in fact an elaborate hoax designed to intimidate or scare the victim.

Once the scene was secure, deputies responded to the last known address Mahoney was known to live. Mahoney was taken into custody at about 6:30 p.m. without incident.

• Mahoney was booked into the Spokane County Jail on the felony charges of Malicious Placement of an Imitation Device and Felony Harassment.
