Burglary Tools, Jewelry, Shaved Keys Found In Vehicle-Property Needs Identification

On Tuesday, April 17th, at about 11:30 a.m., neighbors in the area of 7900 East Gunning Drive observed a vehicle backed into a driveway and two male subjects walk into the backyard of the residence. Not recognizing the two males, an alert neighbor reported the suspicious activity.

Spokane Valley Sheriff's Deputies responded to the area. While en route, Deputy Ebel saw a vehicle matching the description neighbors had provided traveling southbound on Argonne Road. The two occupants inside the vehicle also matched the description provided by neighbors. Deputy Ebel saw the vehicle had expired tabs and initiated a traffic stop near the area of Liberty and Argonne Road.

While speaking with the driver, later identified as 28 year-old Curtis McKelvey, he admitted he and his friend were near the Gunning address looking for work. McKelvey later told deputies he had a heroin addiction and needed money to purchase more of the drug.

Spokane County Sheriff's Office Burglary Task Force members responded to the scene. McKelvey gave team members permission to search the vehicle who located numerous items that appeared to be of questionable ownership and are commonly stolen during residential burglaries. Among the items discovered were numerous pieces of silverware, two quart sized clear plastic bags filled with jewelry and a personal organizer with medical ID cards not in either McKelvey or his passenger's name. Additionally, bolt cutters, gloves and shaved car keys were eventually located in the vehicle.

After checking McKelvey's name, it was confirmed he had a felony warrant out of Adams County. McKelvey was booked into the Spokane County Jail for the warrant.
