Here are the recipients of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Awards for 2012.

These awards are overseen by the Law Enforcement Awards Committee comprised of several employees throughout the Sheriff's Office. They receive nominations during the year and the committee carefully considers each nomination and decides who the recipients are.

The "Sheriff's Star" award recipients are chosen by Sheriff Knezovich for their outstanding job performance, dedication and professionalism.

2012 Outstanding Citizen Award

Tomi Wheeler, Krista Dye, Tom Dye, Rick Jacks

On 6/19/2012, these Outstanding Citizens came to the aide of fallen (wounded) Deputies Spink & Northway.
They kept calm in a very serious and dangerous situation and they did not know where the suspect was.
They did not consider their own safety, but focused on stopping the deputies bleeding, and keeping them alive.

2012 Medal of Merit

Deputy Jeff Bergeron

On 6/19/2012 Deputy Jeff Bergeron was one of the first to arrive at the scene of the fallen deputies
He kept calm and focused, had medical supplies with him to aide both deputies and he directed others how to help. He also did not know the location of the suspect, but did not hesitate in rendering aide.

2012 Medal of Valor

Deputy Dan Dutton

On 6/19/2012 while trying to stop the suspect during a high-speed pursuit, he used "Pit" maneuvers and engaged the suspect known to have shot and wounded two deputies. He risked his own safety to try to end a chase and keep the public safe.

On 6/19/2012, Deputy Matt Spink & Deputy Mike Northway were shot in the Line of Duty during traffic stop by the same suspect. Citizens and fellow officers rendered first-aid at the scene and they were transported to the hospital and underwent surgeries.

2012 Annual Unit Merit Award

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard: Lt. Gary Smith, Sgt. Doug Lawson, Det. Chuck Haley, Dep. Mike Beckman, Dep. Ed Cashman, Dep. Jeff Conway, Dep. John Oliphant, Dep. Tom Warner, Dep. Tracy Allison, Dep. Greg Bruner, Dep. Joe Fields, Dep. Kylene Grub, Dep. Wayne Mauer, Dep. Michelle Eisner, Dep. Robert Rahn, Dep. Marilyn VanTassel, Dep. Janice Zollars, Sgt. Bob Christilaw (retired) and Dep. Brent Garrett (retired).

The Honor Guard performs an average of 25-35 details per year as they represent the Sheriff's Office.
Some of these details include; opening for various trainings, conventions, and funerals for retirees and officers who have died in the line of duty. Any one of the team members can be designated the Person in Charge and can fill the position. Many have taken on specialize duties in the area of flag folding, drill and ceremony. Over the last few years, they have combined training and details with the Spokane Police Department, Spokane Fire Department, Spokane Valley Fire Department, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, and other smaller teams. Western WA. Team recognizes our Honor Guard as the "GO TO team” for filling key positions in big events they attend on the West side of the state. The team is comprised of members from the Detention Division, Patrol Division and Investigative Division.

On 3/13/2012, these three deputies saved the life of a suicidal victim. The victim called 911 and reported he was going to hang himself and gave deputies permission to enter his apartment to "find" him. The Deputies responded very quickly, found the victim hanging and cut him down. They began CPR and were able to get the victim breathing again prior to the medical emergency team’s arrival.

On 3/16/2012, this Detention Services team responded to an injured inmate call in the Spokane County Jail.
Together they did a neck collar placement and the rescue breathing procedure until paramedics arrived and took over.

Deputy Tom Walker

On 4/2/2012, Deputy Walker responded to a fire call. When he arrived at the location, he cleared the residents of the apartment building and gave updated information to the responding firefighters. Without his quick response and action, things could have ended very differently.

Deputy Ray Miller

On 4/26/2012, Deputy Miller stopped to see if a motorist needed help. The driver stated he wasn’t feeling well and thought he may have eaten something "bad". Deputy Miller convinced him to let the paramedics respond to evaluate him and to agree to be transported to the hospital for further treatment. It turned out that the man was having a heart-attack and if he had gone home, he would not have received the critical medical attention needed and may have died.

On 5/2/2012, Correction Deputies Bliven and Rief were enjoying the off-time at Spirit Lake, Idaho when the observed a young male standing at the edge of the dock with his hands tied up with a t-shirt. They contacted the male, pulled him away from the edge of the dock and directed bystanders to call 9-1-1.
The young man told the responding Idaho deputies he was thinking about drowning himself, but someone pulled him away from the edge of the dock.

2012 Life-Saving Award

Deputy Justin White

On 6/7/2012, an inmate attempted suicide by jumping from the mezzanine level of the Jail Housing Module.
Deputy White responded quickly and he was able to grab hold of the inmate’s jumpsuit as he let go of the railing. By holding onto the inmate’s jumpsuit, Deputy White slowed the fall and lessened the distance by several feet before it tore from his grip. He did not think of his own safety but was intent on saving the life of an individual in his charge. Deputy White’s actions changed the whole outcome of this situation.

Deputy Beau Vucinich

On 7/29/2012, Deputy Vucinich found an unconscious person in a vehicle. The vehicle was running and it had a hose directing exhaust gasses into the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Deputy Vucinich removed the man from the vehicle enabling him to breath in the fresh air and the male regained consciousness before being transported to the hospital for further medical attention.

In recognition of your creation of a pro-active sex offender tracking program which allows offender to be located in a more timely manner. Your diligence and determination in creating this program has resulted in a safer community. Thank you for striving for excellence and keeping our citizens safe.
