On Thursday morning, October 4, 2012, at 12:30 a.m., Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Wandermere Albertsons regarding a possible attempted vandalism call. Deputy D. Westlake contacted the complainant who explained he had been parked in
his vehicle in the Wandermere Shopping Center near Shari's restaurant when he saw a male cross the highway. He said he watched the male throw something at the window of a dry cleaning business in the complex located at 12519 N. Division.
Deputy Westlake drove to the complex and observed where a rock had been thrown against a window leaving a white dust film, but did not shatter the window. At about that time, dispatch advised there was an alarm at Fat Daddy's in the Wandermere shopping center.
When Deputy Westlake arrived, he noticed the front door of the business was shattered.
A Spokane P.D. K-9 unit assisted in clearing the business. After securing the business, Deputy Westlake and Deputy S. Audie assisted with tracking the suspect north from the business. When they reached a chain link fence, deputies located a two rubber sandals,
one on each side of the fence. They also located a cash register and broken liquor bottles they later confirmed were taken from Fat Daddy's.
The witness described the suspect as a white male, late teens, wearing a red hat, black jacket and shorts.
At about 2:30 a.m., Deputy R. Brooke located a male walking near the area of Hatch and Wandermere matching the suspect description. Deputy Brooke detained the male, identified as 18-year-old Mitchell Sander, and requested the witness respond to the scene. The
witness positively identified Sander.
• Sander was booked into the Spokane County Jail on the felony charge of 2nd Degree Burglary.
*** Additional Update ***
It appears Mr. Sander was on somewhat of a crime spree this morning. Day shift patrol deputies responded to two additional burglaries this morning. One occurred at Rite Aid in Wandermere Shopping Center and the other at the Wandermere Golf Course. Sander was
caught on video throwing rocks at the Rite Aid window in his unsuccessful attempt to gain entry and he did break into the club house at the golf course, verified by his admission and deputies finding a golf ball on his person during his initial arrest from
the Fat Daddy's burglary. Two additional charges of Attempted Burglary and 2nd Degree Burglary have been included.
Additionally, Sander was charged with Vehicle Prowling this morning as he had possession of a Riverside High School ID card when he was initially arrested. The victim described not only this item, but several other items in Sander’s pockets as items that were
inside her unlocked vehicle. Lastly, detectives plan to add an additional Attempted Burglary charge for Sander's unsuccessful attempt at shattering the window at the dry cleaner's across from the Wandermere Shopping Center.
