Fugitive Interrupts Deputy's Investigation

Posted 6/14/2012 1:40 PM by KWESTBERG

On Tuesday evening, June 12th, 2012, at about 7:45 p.m., Spokane County Sheriff's Deputy Dan Dutton was investigating a domestic situation in the city of Deer Park. While speaking with the homeowner, there was a knock at the front door. The homeowner answered the door and told Deputy Dutton there was someone there to see him.

Deputy Dutton contacted 20-year-old Jesse Smith outside the residence. Smith told Deputy Dutton he wanted to have his criminal history checked because he received a text from an ex-girlfriend accusing him of being a "child molester" and wanted to prove her wrong. Smith said he would wait by Deputy Dutton's patrol car until he was finished at the residence.

When Deputy Dutton finished at the residence, as requested by Smith, he checked his criminal history. It was confirmed that Smith did in fact have a felony warrant out of Jerome, Idaho for three counts of Lewd Conduct with a minor under 16 years old. Deputy Dutton told Smith he was not only under arrest for the warrant, but that the bond had been set at $75,000.

• Smith was booked into the Spokane County Jail as a fugitive for listed warrant.
