What is a Section, Township, Range:
The map of Spokane County is divided into rows and columns called townships and ranges. The rows are townships with 21 as the southernmost and 29 as the northernmost. The columns are ranges with the westernmost as 40 and the easternmost as 45. As an example the southwest corner (bottom-left) of the county would be township 21 and range 40. The northwest corner (top-right) would be township 29 and range 45. Each township/range coordinate is broken up further into sections, and there are a total of 36 sections. Each map has an example of how the sections are numbered.

Your parcel number is created from this information. The first digit represents the range. All parcels start with 0 through 5 which is the last digit of the range our parcel is in. The second digit represents the township. This digit will be from 1 to 9 and is the last digit of your range. The third and fourth digits make up your section. They will be from 01 to 36.

The fifth digit represents your quarter-section. Digits one and two are in the north half. Digits three and four are in the south half. For example, if your parcel number starts 45132 then your parcel would have the coordinates: range 44, township 25, section 13, northern half.

The fifth digit is usually one through four, but there are some exceptions. If it is a five then your parcel falls is still in one section, but it will be in more than one quarter section. It could be entirely in the north or south section maps, but it be split between the north and south maps.

A six as the fifth digit means your parcel resides in more than one section. These sections could be within the same range/township or they may be in adjacent ranges and/or townships.

There are a few parcels with the fifth digit being zero. This means the parcel covers the entire section, and will likely spread into adjacent sections.
