Public Defender
Mission
The Spokane County Public Defender is established to implement the Constitutional and legislatively mandated obligation to provide effective representation to individuals entitled to but unable to afford legal counsel. The office's mission is to responsibly use community resources to provide quality, professional independent and effective representation to all clients appointed to the office.
Attorney staff are required to adhere to the Rules of Professional Conduct and maintain the integrity of their professional relationship with their client. All staff are required to strictly observe client confidentiality, and to represent the office professionally in all of their dealings. All staff are to treat all clients with courtesy, dignity and respect at all times, regardless of the case or circumstances.

Other Public Defenders: Some cases originally assigned to this office may be re-assigned to a completely separate public defender office, "Counsel for Defense" (also called CFD). That office is located on the 4th floor of the main courthouse annex, and can be reached at 509-477-4900.
Parking Information
There is very little parking at our office. The few spaces available have coin operated meters. In certain very limited cases our receptionist may be able to provide a parking pass.
Office Hours
Our doors are open and our telephones are answered 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. We are closed on holidays.

Employment
Attorneys seeking employment in this office must be members in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association, or be eligible to practice under APR 8(c). From time to time we also hire third year law students who have secured a limited license under APR 9.
All applications for both attorney and staff positions must be handled through Spokane County Human Resources Department at 1229 W. Mallon, Spokane, WA 99260-0230, 509-477-5750.
When the Public Defender has a legal or non-legal position to fill, applications are accepted at the Spokane County Human Resources Department, and a list of eligible applicants is forwarded to this office. We must hire from this list.
