Riverfront Park Conservation Area

One of the most ambitious acquisitions to date, the City of Spokane Parks and Recreation Department in partnership with the Spokane County Conservation Futures Program acquired the YMCA building and site within Riverfront Park. Located on the Upper Falls of the Spokane River, the site has been a significant gathering place for thousands of years.

This acquisition project helped facilitate a complete transformation of the site - from a private, four-story building standing at the edge of the Spokane River within Riverfront Park to an open, restored site complete with a "daylighted" creek that had flowed through the basement of the YMCA building for almost five decades.

Today, the site has been restored to a natural condition with native grasses, perennials, shrubs, and trees. In addition to these improvements, ADA pathways take visitors throughout the site. Interpretive signage details the significant history of the site and highlights other iconic landscapes within Spokane County that the Conservation Futures Program has preserved.
