Business was booming at the marriage license counter during the month of July! In fact, the Spokane County Auditor’s Office reports a 22-percent increase in the number of marriage license applications over last year. While this is undoubtedly good news for local businesses that target the wedding market, it’s been a challenge for office staff in the Auditor’s Office and couples are waiting in line longer than usual. Auditor Vicky Dalton reports that August is typically the peak month of the year. “We’re preparing for a record-breaking month, but if couples do a little preparation before coming to the County Courthouse it will speed up the application process,” Dalton said.
Marriage License Tips
• Know the business hours of the Auditor’s Office.
The office is open Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. until1:00 p.m. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before they close for the day. Late afternoons are extremely busy and you might have to wait for up to an hour. The best time to avoid lines is in the morning.
• Marriage License Fees
A Marriage License costs $58. Be prepared to pay in cash or with a check – NO debit or credit cards will be accepted.
• Waiting Period
There is a mandatory three-day waiting period between getting the license application and your ceremony. For example, if you’ve planned your wedding for Saturday, you need to apply NO LATER than the Wednesday before.
• Required Information
Both of you will need to provide your mother’s maiden name, the correct spelling for your parents’ names, and the birthplaces of your parents when you apply for a marriage license. Have this information BEFORE coming to the Auditor’s Office.
• Required Identification
You need to provide identification, such as a driver’s license or passport, to confirm the age of those applying for a marriage license.
Please call us before you come to the County Courthouse to make sure that you have everything you need to successfully complete a marriage license application. The number is (509) 477-2270. (And let’s face it, anything you can do to reduce your stress when planning a wedding is a good thing!)
