Ambassador Program

The Fair Ambassador Program (established in 2000) is open to all youth (male and female).  The candidates need to be at least a junior in High School up to 20 years of age.  The 2009 competition was held on March 14, 2009.  Winners will receive a $500.00 scholarship to the educational institution of their choice.

2009 Spokane County Interstate Fair Ambassadors

The competition began with applications from many contestants. The initial round of judging narrowed the field to the top twelve candidates including Sharlee Abrams (Mt. Spokane HS), Kelly Alderman (Medical Lake HS), Candice Boyd (West Valley HS), Adam Christensen (Central Valley HS), Madelin Copus (Mt. Spokane HS), Carrie Crosby (Mt. Spokane HS), Brian Hoodenpyle (Priest River Lamanna HS), Tara Keenan (Mary Walker HS), Melissa Kirby (Mead HS), Anna Nelson (S.F.C.C.), Emily Snow (Educo Academy), and Sondra Willmann (Shadle Park HS).  These twelve candidates competed at an event on March 14 to select the 2009 Spokane County Interstate Fair Ambassadors (below).

Scholarships were donated by Insulation Specialists Inc. and Pennsylvania Dutch Funnel Cakes.  Each contestant received special gifts from the following program supporters - Associated Agency Group, Camp Fire USA, Deer Park Bowl, Franz Bakery, Garland Theater, Interstate Fair Food Vendors, LCD Expo Services, Pizza Rita, Seven-Up Bottling Company, Spokandy, Spokane Indians Baseball, and the Valley YMCA.


Candice Boyd (West Valley HS):

Candice Boyd

Candice is the 17-year-old daughter of Jon and Sherri Boyd of Spokane Valley. She has extensive community service hours via her participation in fund raising for the American Heart Association, Multiple Sclerosis Walk, Bloomsday, and the Veteran’s Nursing Home.  Candice plans to attend a four-year university and obtain a Master’s Degree in the field of science.  In school, Candice is involved with the Washington Drug Free Youth program, National Honor Society, and Link Crew. She is also co-captain of the varsity softball team and holds a cumulative G.P.A. of 4.0. Candice has played softball since she was eight years old. She plays on a Select team in the fast pitch summer softball league and aspires to play at the college level.  Pam Francis in her letter of recommendation for Candice stated, “Everyone knows that supporting this deserving, well rounded student will only assist our country in providing strong adults, positioning our future in the world with leaders who are intellectual things, who are also thoughtful, compassionate with the vision to dream, inspire others and have the strength to be innovative.”

Madelin Copus (Mt. Spokane HS):

Maddy Copus

Madelin is the 18-year-old daughter of Glen Copus and Michelle Wolfe of Mead, Washington. She has participated with the following community organizations; Friends for Life (animal rescue group) and the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center Junior Advisory Board where she is one of the two Co-Chairs. Maddy’s family is also a part of the Washington State Foster program which has given her a great appreciation for everything that she has been given in life and the opportunities she has had. In school, Maddy has a 3.7 G.P.A. She is a member of DECA (qualifying for State all four years and for Nationals this year), French Club (treasurer), tennis, and National Honor Society. Maddy plans to attend either Western Washington University or the University of Washington double majoring in Child Psychology and Pre-Law with a minor in French language. She then plans to attend the William H. Gates Law School at the University of Washington ton continue her law studies. Her hope is to become a child protection lawyer. Maddy has been granted “Admission with Distinction” and a Presidential Scholarship for outstanding service work and grades. Maddy has been a long-term exhibitor at the Interstate Fair (since she was 8). Maddy enjoys showing rabbits and Shetland Sheepdogs in both 4-H and AKC. She also enjoys playing tennis and hanging out with friends.

Anna Nelson (Spokane Falls Community College):

Anna Nelson

Anna is the 18-year-old daughter of Steve and Carol Nelson of Spokane. She has a G.P.A. of 3.97. She is currently a member of the Interpreter Training Program (ITP) Club. She also plays the piano. Anna has served in the community by completing over 520 volunteer hours at the Valley Hospital and Medical Center. She has also volunteered over 180 hours at a church club for young girls. Additionally she has assisted at the Northwest Christian Thrift Store, Sunrise Elementary school helping kids learn to read, and has served as a House Page in the Capital in Olympia. Anna’s plans for the future include finishing at SFCC then transferring to Western Oregon University to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in sign language interpretation. She eventually wants to do freelance work in the sign language field. Anna adds, “I love art! Quite often I make abstract art, paint pictures, or create fun projects. I am fond of taking ‘junk’ and turning it into a piece of art. I love to snowboard and hang out with my friends.”

Emily Snow (Educo Academy)

Emily Snow

Emily is the 16-year-old daughter of Dean and Christine Snow of Medical Lake, Washington. She has assisted in bettering her community by operating the kitchen for Vacation Bible School at the Medical Lake Community Church, assisting in a booth at the Founder’s Day festivities, participating in the Interstate Fair and Central Washington Fair showing Lowline cattle, assisting with election work last year, and singing in her church’s Music Team. Emily is home-schooled and she adds, “I love the freedom it gives me to pursue academic excellence as well as my personal interests”. Through the home school networking group, Emily tutors kids in playing chess. She was also a member of a Forensics (Public Speaking) Club. She is a member of the Cattlemen’s Association as well as the Northwest Lowline Association. Her G.P.A. is 4.0. Emily’s plans for the future include attending culinary school. She dreams of becoming a chef or even owning her own restaurant or bed and breakfast inn. As Emily enjoys drama, singing, and dancing she would like to begin her own performing arts group as well. Emily adds, “I am concerned about worthy causes; therefore in 2007 I initiated and coordinated a fundraiser for Life Services of Spokane, personally making homemade items for nearly six months.” She loves to cook, write, direct, perform, talk to people, and has a passion for photography.
