A Message from the Assessor

May 30, 2012

Spokane County Residents,

The Spokane County Assessor's Office will mail 205,595 Official Valuation notices on June 1st which affects 2013 property taxes. Continued improvements have been made to the appraisal process to insure the quality and equalization (fairness) of assessments.

Valuation notices will be mailed to all property owners with the exception of government exempt property that did not change value. 2013 tax year values and copies of assessment notices have been posted on this site.

Property tax amounts cannot be determined until levy rates are calculated in January of 2013. Levy rates are determined by the amount of spending by the various taxing districts. Additional levy information is published on this website.

The Assessor's Office analyzed 4,561 residential sales to determine the level of assessment for the 2012 assessment year. Generally, real estate sales in 2011 determine property values for the 2012 assessment year which affect 2013 property tax bills. The assessment date (appraisal date) is January 1, 2012.

The total taxable value of the county decreased for the third consecutive year to $33.6 billion, a revaluation loss of $1.18 billion. Of that, 121,118 single family residences decreased in value, 3,519 residences did not change, and 4,849 residences increased in value. Commercial and industrial property values were generally flat; however, in that mix of property there were some large increases.

New construction is totaled and added to the assessment roll in September.

We continue to strive to make customer service and fairness our goal. It is an honor and a pleasure serving this community.

Vicki Horton
