North Spokane (Five Mile) Watershed

Five Mile Prairie is a prominent feature dominating the landscape in North Spokane. The basalt bluff rises several hundred feet above the surrounding land. Many residents on Five Mile Prairie and in the areas along the toe of the bluff have suffered with wet basements, soggy lawns and flooded intersections.

Landowners developing their properties have become aware of the difficulty of finding safe places to put the additional stormwater runoff being created by new subdivisions. Work is underway to construct a regional stormwater system to address major drainage problems.

While the regional stormwater system will consist of several stormwater facilities such as detention ponds (ponds that hold water and meter it out slowly), the first facility (the Price and Wall Regional Stormwater Facility) is an infiltration pond (a low spot where stormwater can soak into the ground).  For more information on the Price and Wall Regional Stormwater Facility click here

Public opinion and input regarding regional facility planning and design is highly valued.  Input is gathered through public meetings for all of these projects.  Notices/ads are placed in the Spokesman Review and property owners in the vicinity of proposed sites are notified by mail.  We also make every effort to keep our web information up to date by posting notices and progress reports so you may want to check back periodically to see if there is anything new going on.
