Elder Abuse Investigation by V.A.L.O.R.

Description: Investigation of elder abuse in all its forms is difficult at the best of times. Over the span of this 2-day course, physical abuse, sexual abuse, financial exploitation, and neglect investigative strategies and concerns will be examined and discussed. V.A.L.O.R. (Vulnerable Adult Linked Organizational Response) is a federally funded project designed to educate law enforcement on the subject of elder abuse, as well as provide specialized tactics to investigate and resolve elder abuse cases. Only commissioned law enforcement personnel may attend. This same course is offered again on December 10-11th, 2009.

Sexual Deviance in the New Millenium

Description: This two-day training includes real-life video presentations, depicting the various characteristics of sexual deviance and serial sexual murder. This interactive training block focuses on sexually deviant individuals and the underlying motivations of their bizarre crimes. Erotophonophiliacs, pedophiles, necrophiles, pregnancy, and crush fetishes will be explored, as well as their potential addictive processes via use of the internet and other means. The instructor is Dr. Lawrence Simon, a nationally recognized expert on sexual deviance. As part of the tuition cost, Dr. Simon is including a signed copy of his new book, Mortal Desires: True Accounts of Sexual Deviance.

Preventing Staff Sexual Misconduct Against Offenders – PREA

Description: This course is presented by the National Curriculum and Training Institute, Inc (NCTI). This course addresses the staff training recommendations in the NPREC’s standards, and provides agencies with prevention and identification strategies to reduce incidences of staff/offender sexual misconduct. This certification training is a fast paced, interactive course that teaches criminal justice professionals how to effectively facilitate NCTI’s 4-hour Preventing Staff Sexual Misconduct Against Offenders Workshop. The training uses reality based scenarios, activities, role plays, and group interaction to provide the necessary tools to effectively recognize and substantially reduce with a goal of eliminating staff and offender victimization.

Tired Cops: Understanding and Managing Police Fatigue

Description: This course is open to all law enforcement professionals, especially those holding supervisory positions within their agencies. Dr. Vila’s day-long workshop will focus on how fatigue and long work hours affect officer performance, health, and safety. Students will learn (1) how fatigue increases risk of injury, illness and death and how to monitor and assess sleep quality and fatigue; (2) how time of day, sleep history, hours awake, hours on duty, and consecutive work days affect alertness on the job; (3) critical considerations when managing officer fatigue; and (4) how to find a common ground where management and labor can successfully negotiate fatigue-related issues like shift work, compressed work schedules, and work hours.
