Dr. Vila’s day-long workshop will focus on how fatigue and long work hours affect officer performance, health, and safety. Students will learn (1) how fatigue increases risk of injury, illness and death and how to monitor and assess sleep quality and fatigue; (2) how time of day, sleep history, hours awake, hours on duty, and consecutive work days affect alertness on the job; (3) critical considerations when managing officer fatigue; and (4) how to find a common ground where management and labor can successfully negotiate fatigue-related issues like shift work, compressed work schedules, and work hours. |
