Who Your Lawyer Can and Cannot Talk To
Your public defender cannot tell others what he/she knows about a client's case or anything else the client has him or her.
This sometimes frustrates the friends and family of clients that we are representing. Nevertheless, we cannot discuss our client's case with family members or anyone else, unless and until the client specifically gives us permission.
This does not mean friends and family cannot talk to the public defender who is representing their child or spouse or boyfriend. Often the public defender is glad to hear from family or friends who can provide information about the person they are representing. And lawyers are encouraged to return phone calls, even if they're not allowed to tell you everything about the case.
