American Red Cross Courses

Spokane County Aquatics offers Red Cross Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, CPR and First Aid Courses. Check below for 2016 course schedules.

Red Cross Lifeguard Training Courses (LGT):  

American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Upon successful completion of the LGT course, participants receive American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificates that are valid for 2 years.

Fee: $225.00 + optional Lifeguard textbook ($37) + optional CPR mask ($15), includes all materials
Location: The Northside Aquatics Facility
Course Prerequisites: This course is strictly limited to those individuals that are at least age 15 by conclusion of the course and are able to successfully demonstrate the prerequisite swimming skills evaluation. The prerequisite swimming skills evaluation is completed on the first day and includes the following skills:

1). 300 yard swim: Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may use front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both, but swimming on the back is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.

2). Tread water: Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates must place their hands under their armpits and keep their head above water.

3). Times Event: Starting in the water, swim 20-yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 12 feet, retrieve a 10-pound dive brick, return to the surface, swim 20-yards on the back returning to the starting point with both hands holding the brick and exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Must be completed within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Swim goggles are not allowed. Candidates should not swim the return distance under water.

*Bring towel, dry clothes, a snack, and appropriate swim wear to each class.

Lifeguard Blended Learning Review Course: 

Blended learning combines online learning with on-site skills sessions where you will practice skills and demonstrate competency. Students should plan to complete the online lessons prior to your first on-site skills class. To complete the online lessons students will need access to a computer and the internet. When registering for this course, students must be sure to provide an email address, to which we will send instructions on how to complete the online lessons.

Fee: $85.00 + optional CPR mask ($15)
Location: The Northside Aquatics Facility
Course Prerequisites: Bring LGT textbook and current Red Cross LGT card with you to first day of class. Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course:

This course will help you teach skills that may save a life, gain terrific work experience as an aquatics professional, earn money or join a volunteer team while you help people learn valuable skills.  In addition you will learn organizational and presentation skills that will help you in any career and make a difference in peoples lives. Whether you want to splash around with kids and teach them to swim, help children and adults refine their strokes or teach diving safety techniques, you can do it as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.

Fee: $225.00, includes all materials
Location: The Northside Aquatics Facility
Prerequisites: Minimum age of 16.  Fundamentals of Instructor Training Course (FIT) will be provided with the course. Demonstrate swimming skills by swimming the following strokes: Front Crawl - 25 yards; Back Crawl - 25 yards; Breaststroke - 25 yards; Elementary backstroke - 25 yards; Sidestroke - 25 yards; Butterfly - 15 yards.  Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).  Tread water for 1 minute.

CPR Recertification Course:

This comprehensive CPR course provides training for use with adult, infant and child victims in a variety of emergency situations. Skills include performing rescue breathing, clearing an obstructed airway, and performing one-rescuer CPR. You will also discuss cardiovascular disease and injury prevention.

Fee: $50.00 + optional CPR mask ($15)

Prerequisites: Bring current Red Cross CPR card and LGT or CPR textbook with you to class
