Target Zero Task Force
Washingtonians are preparing for summer fun. Celebrations that involve alcohol sometimes result in drunk drivers on our roads. So, after backyard parties, barbeques, graduation, a day at the beach or an evening at the bar, don’t drive if you have been drinking. Take a taxi, designate a sober driver or call a sober friend.
The purpose of the extra patrols is to take the impaired driver off the roadways and make the 4th of July weekend a safe family event for all involved. The patrols are funded by a grant from Washington Traffic Safety Commission and supported by the Spokane County Target Zero Task Force.
The Cheney Police Department, EWU Police Department, Airway Heights Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Republic Police Department, Ferry County Sheriff’s Office and the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the extra emphasis patrols from July 1st through July 13th.
There have been a total of 75 summertime traffic deaths from 2007-2013 in Spokane County. Ferry County and Pend Oreille counties each had 6 summertime traffic deaths from 2007-2013. These traffic deaths were from crashes between 6 pm on Friday of Memorial Day weekend and 5:59 am on the Tuesday after Labor Day.
The goal of this Summertime DUI Patrol is to have a fatal free, family safe summer. Let’s have a zero traffic death summer! This goal will be attainable by everyone working together! Remember it is still not legal to drive under the influence of marijuana, if you drive high you will get a dui! Let’s all have a safe summer!
