In honor of the men and women who have been wounded or killed while serving their country and are recipients of the Purple Heart Medal, the Board of County Commissioners have joined President Obama and Governor Inslee in declaring August 7, 2014, “Purple Heart Day”. In Spokane County, the recognition will continue through Sunday, August 10th with the Purple Heart flag flying from the Courthouse and purple lights illuminating the tower at night.

Spokane County’s Veteran Services provides emergency assistance for more than 7,230 veterans. According to Veterans Services Director Chuck Elmore, they provide a wide variety of emergency assistance in voucher form to a specific vendor (for example: grocery store, landlord, etc.) for the following emergency related needs: food, gasoline/bus passes, rent (facing eviction), water and electric (facing shut-off), burial assistance, furnace oil (limited), work clothing (limited), prescription/medical supplies (limited).

In addition to emergency financial aid, Veteran Services offers information services and assistance on a variety of Veteran’s benefits, such as applying for military discharge papers (DD-214). Referrals are also made to other community resources for education, employment and counseling. For more information, contact Veteran Services at (509) 477-3690.
