Ambassador Program

The Fair Ambassador Program (established in 2000) is open to all youth (male and female).  The candidates need to be at least a junior in High School up to 20 years of age.  The 2012 competition will be held on March 17, 2012.  Winners will receive a $500.00 scholarship to the educational institution of their choice.

2011 Spokane County Interstate Fair Ambassadors

The competition began with applications from many contestants. The initial round of judging narrowed the field to the top candidates.  The candidates competed at an event on March 11 to select the 2011 Spokane County Interstate Fair Ambassadors (below).

Scholarships were donated by Insulation Specialists Inc. and Pennsylvania Dutch Funnel Cakes.  Each contestant received special gifts from the following program supporters - Associated Insurance Agencies, Camp Fire USA, Interstate Fair Food Vendors, Lathrop Enterprises, LCD Expo Services, Main  Market Co-Op, Pepsi Beverages Company, Pizza Rita, RiteCare Spokane, Spokandy, Spokane Indians Baseball, and YMCA - Spokane Valley.


Brianna Broadwater (Lewis and Clark HS):

Brianna Broadwater

Brianna is the 18-year-old daughter of Cindy and Mark Broadwater of Spokane. Brianna has participated in the community through the Lewis and Clark High School food drive, Teens for Jeans fund raiser, Spokane Guild School Penny Drive, Tutoring at Grant Elementary, Burgers for the Heart, Spokane Crisis Nursery volunteer, and Unitarian Universalist Church volunteer. In High School, Brianna belongs to the National Honor Society and is president of the Cooking Club. Her favorite classes are English and history. She has a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and has been enrolled in AP and honor classes since she was a Freshman. Brianna’s goals are to attend college to double-major in business and psychology. She hopes to gain her doctorate and open her own practice. She adds, “I’m very goal oriented and committed to achieving the standards I set for myself. I believe I will always be an active volunteer because I see that today’s youth have lost a sense of community and I believe that I can change that.” Brianna is an active potter at Spokane Clay Connection and is very passionate about her art. She also takes voice lessons and participates in musical theater. She is an avid photographer and has had her work published on-line. She also states, “If I get chosen to be an ambassador, I would love to take photos of the Fair!”

Chelsea Ellis (Central Valley HS):

Chelsea is the 18-year-old daughter of Jonathan and Kim Ellis of Veradale, Washington. She has extensive community service hours via her participation in Key Club and National Honor Society. Additionally, through Camp Fire USA she has volunteered at the local food bank, visited Veterans, and participated in babysitting at a local elementary school. In school, Chelsea is involved in many clubs including Key Club, National Honor Society, FBLA, Green Club, and Leadership Team. She also serves as the Central Valley representative on the Fair and Expo Center’s Junior Advisory Board. Chelsea was also very involved in marching band and color guard during the fall. This spring, Chelsea will receive her Wohelo Award – Camp Fire’s highest youth award and is the only recipient of the high honor for 2011 in the Inland Northwest Council serving the Greater Spokane Area and Northern Idaho. She is also receiving a Chase Youth Award for her community service efforts. Chelsea plans to attend Washington State University this fall and pursue a career as a pediatric nurse practitioner or a pediatric physician’s assistant. She adds, “When I graduate from school, I would like to find a job at a hospital or a doctor’s building then go back to school one day to get my doctorate and open my own business.” She is currently studying advanced Spanish independently to prepare herself to study abroad in college.

Alicia Knecht (The Oaks):

Alicia Knecht

Alicia is the 18-year-old daughter of Rich and Allison Knecht of Spokane. She has contributed to her community through being an active member of 4-H for over ten years. She has participated in multiple programs including Bordertown Riders, Centennial Reinbow Riders, Ride the Wind, Know Your Government, Teen Advisory Group, and Health Rocks. She has also been a representative for the Junior Advisory Board for four years and is currently serving as their Co-Chair. Alicia is a student at Forward Youth Church, 1831 College Group, Captivated Group, and am a volunteer at the church. She has volunteered at the Blue Waters Youth Ranch where she helped teach underprivileged children how to ride horses. Some of Alicia’s High School activities include speech and debate, select and standard choir, and drama crew. She is also a Teacher’s Assistant. Alicia’s plans for the future include attending North Idaho College this fall hoping to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a massage therapist. Alicia states that her interests include training horses, target shooting, youth group, crafts, singing, and reading.

Alysa Norton (Spokane Community College)

Alysa is the 18-year-old daughter of Jan and Sue Norton of Otis Orchards. With a G.P.A. of 3.6, Alysa has participated National Honor Society (serving as secretary her senior year of high school). At SCC, she is on the honor roll and qualified to become a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Society. She volunteers with the International Peer Mentor group. Outside of school and in the 4-H community, she had the opportunity to create Spokane County’s first Photography Club. For her future aspirations, Alysa hopes to finish in the next year and a half with her Associates of Arts degree then transfer to Gonzaga University to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in marketing with a possible minor in public relations. She will then seek employment in marketing. As photography is also one of her hobbies, she hopes to carry that on into her future as well opening up her own studio. Alysa has been involved with a variety of community affairs which include being a teen counselor for three years at South Camp for the 4-H Horse Program. She is a teacher at Opportunity Presbyterian Church’s vacation bible school. She has volunteered at the Good Samaritan Retirement Community and at Spokane Community College through the International Peer Mentoring Program. She has also served as Vice President and Secretary of the Spanish Spurs 4-H Club. She enjoys horseback riding, photography, acrylic painting and her favorite flower is the sunflower.
