URBAN GROWTH AREA UPDATE
The Board of County Commissioners adopted a new Urban Growth Area Boundary (UGA) on July 18th 2013. The UGA establishes a boundary around developing areas with everything outside the boundary intended for rural land use and everything inside the boundary intended for urban land use. The Commissioner's decision expands the UGA in some areas while reducing it in other areas. The decision included consideration of environmental studies collaboration with other jurisdictions and several years of public input.
The County Commissioners adoption of a new Urban Growth Area was subsequently appealed to the Washington State Growth Management Hearings Board. The Commissioner's decision was overturned and invalidated by the Hearings Board. The County is currently negotiating with the appellants to resolve the issues raised in the appeal.
